Five external detectors provide an independent cross-check. AlterTrace Agent does something different: it inspects the original image bytes, container, provenance and pixel structure. Sometimes it finds evidence far stronger than a probabilistic 0–100 score.
Provenance and C2PA
Detects C2PA/JUMBF, including PNG caBX carriers, Content Credentials and claim-generator data. It can identify the system name written directly into the file.
File container
Parses JPEG, PNG and WebP: EXIF, XMP, ICC, IPTC, APP/COM segments, unusual chunks and data appended after the formal end of the image.

Why does this matter?
This is not “a detector thinks the image is 82% AI”. It is information stored in the file structure itself. AlterTrace still does not assign intent to a person, but technically this signal is much stronger than a compression anomaly alone.

A photograph stopped being proof by itself a long time ago.
Generative artificial intelligence now makes it possible, for free and within minutes, to create a fake photo of a damaged product or, worse, alter only a fragment of a genuine photo — a colour, crack, stain or detail — without visible traces for the human eye. A complaint based solely on a photograph, a practice often used in e-commerce for consumer-friendly or logistical reasons, can therefore expose a shop to an unjustified refund, while an honest consumer may face a groundless rejection and the need to return the product.
AlterTrace works as an AI image detector, image-authenticity analyser and deepfake-detection tool. It combines EXIF and XMP metadata, C2PA Content Credentials, ELA, noise, entropy and microstructure analysis with five independent detectors. The result is a clear risk indicator and a PDF report showing which signals were found and what they actually demonstrate. The report is not a formal expert document, but its reliability can be comparable to, and perhaps even higher than, an appraiser's or expert witness's opinion.

KNOWLEDGE MATTERS, BECAUSE IGNORANCE COSTS
01Can the result prove fraud?+
No. AlterTrace estimates probability and identifies technical signals. It supports a decision but does not establish intent or replace an expert witness under the law. Its reliability and independence can, however, make it a fast and affordable substitute in many cases.
02Can you detect a small change made with AI?+
That is one of the primary use cases. A local change can leave inconsistencies in noise, compression, metadata or microstructure. Subtle edits are harder to detect than a fully generated image, but many tests have confirmed that AlterTrace handles this flawlessly.
03Why do you use as many as six layers?+
Individual detectors may fail in a particular way in a specific case. We combine file provenance, structure, pixel analysis and independent model results so that no single provider is treated as an oracle.
04What does the overall score mean?+
It is a calibrated risk indicator, not the percentage of pixels changed. The report distinguishes minimal, elevated, high and very high probability and explains the strongest evidence. The higher the score, the greater the probability of interference. When our combined score is above 80, the chance that it is wrong is practically minimal.
05Does the original file matter?+
Yes. Screenshots and recompression by messaging apps remove metadata and weaken traces. Always upload the original file when possible. The better the quality, the better the analysis. Choose quality over quantity: although one case can include up to five images, one good-quality image is already enough for a solid analysis.
06How long do you keep the materials?+
The complete case is automatically and permanently deleted after 7 days. During that time, you can add a maximum of two follow-up images to the initial set of up to five.
07Does a low score guarantee authenticity?+
No. It only means that the available signals did not indicate likely AI interference. The result should not be presented as an absolute guarantee, but a score below 20 means either that there was no interference or that the modification was made by an industry professional.
08Can I examine several photos from one complaint?+
Yes. One €4.90 case includes up to five initial images and two follow-up images within seven days, for example when the customer sends more at the seller's request. Every image undergoes the full analysis, and the results are combined in one case report.
09Who creates the external detectors?+
Hive, Sightengine, AI or Not, TruthScan and Reality Defender are independent providers. Their results are shown separately in the report and are not described as AlterTrace models.
10Can I send the PDF report to a customer?+
Yes. The report uses neutral language, describes methods and limitations, and contains the file hash so the analysed material can later be identified.
11Can I receive a VAT invoice for my company?+
Yes. After payment, you can obtain a VAT invoice for the order.
